The lineup of performers for the Garfield Center’s multi-genre concert fundraiser, “The Kitchen Sink Cabaret.”

It’s Pop. It’s Rock. It’s Broadway. It’s Jazz. It’s Old Standards. One might say it’s everything, including the kitchen sink! The Garfield Center for the Arts will present “The Kitchen Sink Cabaret” on Saturday, May 17th at 8 PM. It’s an evening of diverse music, with songs chosen by its performers from any genre. It will be one of two fundraiser concerts the GCA will present this year as the organization ramps up their efforts toward a capital campaign for a new stage, rigging and other facility needs.

The event gathers some of the community’s favorite singers and performers, all of whom have appeared on the Garfield stage in many productions over the years. The show will feature multiple musical performances by Shannon and Nic Carter, Brad Chaires, Natalie and Max Hagan, Melissa McGlynn, and JW Ruth.

Each of the performers are known for great past GCA musical theatre performances, including roles in “Beauty and the Beast,” “Annie,” “Shrek,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “The Addams Family Musical,” “Lucky Stiff,” and many more. And their talent is not just limited to singing, as they have all appeared in GCA non-musicals including “Noises Off,” “Prescription: Murder,” “Greater Tuna,” “The Play That Goes Wrong,” and “Psycho Beach party,” among others.

The performance will start at 8 PM on Saturday, May 17th. All tickets are $25.00, and proceeds will support the Garfield Center’s capital campaign efforts. Tickets may be purchased anytime at www.garfieldcenter.org, or by calling the Box Office at 410-810-2060 during regular Box Office hours on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 AM to 3 PM.

Garfield calls for Playmakers 2025 counselors and interns

March 26, 2025 by Garfield Center Leave a Comment

Share

Playmakers, the Garfield Center for the Arts’ annual summer theatre youth education camp, is gearing up for its 2025 edition. The camp will once again be overseen by director Kaitlyn Wright, this year’s Kent County Teacher of the Year.

Every year, the camp is staffed with counselors and interns, many of whom were past participants in Playmakers. The main distinction between a counselor and intern position is that interns are participating to fulfill school community service hour requirements, while counselors earn a small paid stipend. The GCA may appoint anyone with theatre experience who is interested in the positions, including students, adults and retirees who have never attended or participated in Playmakers.

If you are interested in becoming a counselor or intern for Playmakers, you must be at least 16 years old to become an intern, while counselors must be at least 17 years old. To express your interest in either position, please send an email to the GCA Executive Director, Steven Arnold, at [email protected] and you will receive additional information and application requirements.

Join us March 22 for an evening of great music at the Garfield Center

March 15, 2025 by Garfield Center Leave a Comment

The High & Wides were formed in 2015, and have roots both in Baltimore and the rural Delmarva peninsula. They draw on a shared background playing straight ahead bluegrass, but weave in influences from new wave to old time to make music that evokes the era before country, bluegrass, rockabilly, western swing, and Rock ‘n’ Roll broke off into separate and strictly defined genres. The band’s music imagines an alternate timeline – if instead of the electric-guitar and drums driven band format that took off in the 50s, the string band lineup had dominated across genres of popular music in the 20th century, what would be happening now? Members are Marc Dykeman (guitar, vocals), Sam Guthridge (banjo, mandolin, vocals), Nate Grower (fiddle), and Mike Buccino (bass).

They have released two full-length albums of original music, 2018’s “Lifted” and 2019’s “Seven True Stories”. In March 2022 they released their first album of covers, “Blood”, which pays tribute to exemplars of the two-part “brother duet” singing style that first inspired the formation of the band. They bring their incredible performance style and music to the the stage of the Garfield Center of the Arts on Saturday, March 22nd.

Their evening will also include a performance by Wicked Sycamore, an all-female trio from the Baltimore/DC area who bring a mischievous edge to contemporary folk, combining intricate vocal harmonies with thoughtful arrangement, mood shifts, and storytelling. Their original music ranges from fun and lighthearted sing-alongs to deep, introspective tunes for the ages – all influenced by traditional roots music, blues, pop, bluegrass, funk, and jazz.

On the evening of the performance, the Garfield Center lobby will open at 7 PM, House Doors will open for general admission seat selected starting at 7:30 PM, and the show begins at 8:00 PM. For tickets, it is strongly recommended that ticket buyers visit Eventbrite HERE to purchase them online. The Garfield Center’s Box Office is open today, Friday, March 14th until 3:00 PM, and will reopen next Wednesday for over-the-phone and in-person tickets sales that day from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The Box Office will also be open for the same hours on Thursday and Friday of next week.

Auditions February 25th, 27th and March 1st for “A Rock Sails By”

February 14, 2025 by Garfield Center Leave a Comment

The second production in the 2025 season at the Garfield Center for the Arts is Sean Grennan’s “A Rock Sails By.” To be directed by the GCA’s Theatre Manager, Nic Carter, the Garfield Center has announced audition dates and times for the production. “A Rock Sails By” will be performed over three weekends from April 25th through May 4th.

In Grennan’s play, Dr. Lynn Cummings, a facts-only astrophysicist, has discovered herself at life’s crossroads as she deals with personal, life-altering challenges. She has always believed in science over faith in the unknown, but this certainty, once a source of comfort, is now a cause for emptiness. When an unidentified object is sighted heading toward Earth, she grants an interview to a journalist who misquotes her. With her credibility on the line, she invites him to witness the object with her as it comes closest to Earth. Dr. Cummings hopes it will pass without incident, but there is no telling what she will discover beyond the stars. It is a thought-provoking story filled with wit, humor, emotion and meaning.

Auditions for “A Rock Sails By” are scheduled for Tuesday, February 25 at 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 27 at 7:00 PM, and Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 PM.

All auditionees will be asked to do cold-readings from the script. A prepared monologue is not required, but if an actor has one prepared, the Director will gladly allow the actor to perform it.

Character descriptions can be found here.  Auditionees are strongly encouraged to visit that page to understand the roles available. For any additional questions, contact the director, Nic Carter, at [email protected].

The Garfield Center announces the cast for the hilarious farce “Noises Off”

January 22, 2025 by Garfield Center Leave a Comment

Share

The cast of “Noises Off” at the Garfield Center for the Arts. The show opens February 21st.

While observing a performance of his play, “The Two Of Us,” from backstage in 1975, English playwright Michael Frayn decided he found the play much funnier and satisfying from that perspective than from up front. In 1977, he wrote a one-act backstage comedy titled “Exits,” demonstrating what happens when things go wrong. Eventually, “Exits” was expanded into a Three-Act play and re-titled “Noises Off,” and it opened at London’s Lyric Theatre in 1982. It jumped the pond to Broadway in 1983. It is well-loved by professional and community theatre audiences, even though it requires a huge, two-story set that rotates between acts to show both the front and backstage areas of a touring play. Because the comedy is so outrageous and hilarious, producing theatres feel the effort is well worth the undertaking.

The upcoming production at the Garfield Center, which opens February 21st, is sponsored by Hanson and Linda Robbins, Sara Grosvenor, Chips and Liz Moore, and Harry and Sandy Sears.

In the play, a troupe of American actors are preparing to tour throughout England of a farce titled “Nothing On.” Act One of “Noises Off” depicts the turbulent final dress rehearsal. Act Two occurs a month later, and we are now backstage behind the set for “Nothing On.” The cast has settled into quarrelsome relationships and outright hostility, resulting in a silent backstage ballet of struggle and sabotage, even as the play is somehow still being performed on the other side of the set. Act Three happens 2 months later, where we are once again on the set of “Nothing On.” By now, things have gotten so terrible among the cast that their arguments, dirty tricks, and intentional interference has spilled out onto the stage and into the show.

Performing the show is a cast populated by some of the area’s most talented actors. In order of appearance, Melissa McGlynn plays the roles of Dotty Otley/Mrs. Clackett. Melissa, well known on our stage, has been in many GCA productions, including her wonderful turn as Miss Hannigan in “Annie,” and her incredible turn as Rita in “Lucky Stiff.” Playing Lloyd Dallas is Matt Folker. Matt appeared as Judge Turpin in the GCA production of “Sweeney Todd,” and the Beadle in “Mrs.

Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge,” The role of Garry Lejeune/Roger Tramplemain is played by Dylan Lyles, who recently appeared as Gomez in “The Addams Family Musical,” and the White Rabbit in “Shrek the Musical.” New to the Garfield Center stage is Maya Barkus playing Brooke Ashton/Vicki. Maya is a resident of Delaware and a student at Washington College.

Playing the role of Poppy Norton-Taylor is Brianna Johnson, who appeared as Susan in the GCA production of “Prescription: Murder,” and various roles in “The Good Doctor,” and “The Laramie Project.” Patrick Pearce, who plays Frederick Fellows/Philip Brent, appeared in the lead roles of

Harold Ryan in “Happy Birthday, Wanda June,” and Dr. Roy Fleming in “Prescription: Murder.” Sharon Herz, who plays Belinda Blair/Flavia Brent, appeared as Miss Scarlet in “Clue,” and Elizabeth in “1957 Pink Thunderbird.” Playing Tim Algood is Dominic Delcoco, who played Herb in “Wanda June,” and Lucas in “Addams Family.”. Gil Rambach, who plays Selsdon Mowbray/Burglar, was the Bishop in “Shrek,” and directed “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

The Director, Steven Arnold, is also the Scenic Designer. He has assembled an incredibly talented and dedicated production staff to tackle its challenges. The Production Stage Manager is Allison Jones. Allison has been on our stage in “Little Women” and “Short Attention Span Theatre.” Carmen Grasso, who has designed and built the “Noises Off” set for three previous productions, is a Scenic Design Consultant and designed and constructed specialty pieces for the set with help from Jean Messick. Butch Clark, the GCA Technical Director, performs his typical wizardry as the Construction Chief, and he has received construction assistance from Jeff Russell, Jim Landskroener, Jim Johnson, and Benji Price. Barbi Bedell is the Costumer, Nic Carter will design the Lighting, Cory Palmer will oversee Props, Steffi Ricketts is the English Dialect Coach, Maya McGrory is the Fight and Fall Choreographer, and Benji Price is the Technical Assistant.

“Noises Off” opens Friday, February 21st and runs weekends through March 9th. Performances are at 8 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 PM on Sundays. Tickets are now available for purchase online anytime at www.garfieldcenter.org, or by calling us at 410-810-2060 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 AM to 3 PM.
