Mr. Whitman —

I agree with you description “United States Vietnam debacle” but certainly find no objection to honoring the men and women of America, including yourself, who served their country in that debacle. They didn’t make the decisions for the nation to enter into that conflict nor decide how to prosecute the war. The personnel of the U.S. were following the orders dictated by politicians when they served, as is the case in every military proceeding.

I served in the U.S. Army as an enlisted man from ’58 to ’62. I then became deeply involved in the movement to end the United States’ Vietnam debacle. There was no honor in this interventionary excursion in which 50,000-plus and millions of Vietnamese were killed. It is one of our nation’s greatest shames. There is absolutely nothing to commemeraten or honor.
