Building African American Minds (BAAM) is proud to announce a transformational $1 million gift from Dr. Eileen Amy Ryan of Rochester, NY, to endow and expand its Girls Program. This generous investment will enable BAAM to extend its reach to middle school girls starting this fall, providing them with a safe, supportive, and empowering environment to learn and grow.

Dr. Ryan, a transgender woman, is deeply committed to fostering mentorship, acceptance, and opportunity for girls and young women. “This notion of women mentoring girls is very powerful to me,” she shared.

With this endowment, BAAM will strengthen its commitment to uplifting young women by offering expanded programs and mentorship opportunities. Dr. Ryan’s gift underscores her belief that women should support and uplift one another, regardless of individual experiences or societal constructs. “To me, it’s an immense privilege to do this,” she said.

Dr. Ryan, who provided a part of the seed money to start BAAM’s girls program in 2020, is also a major supporter of Girls Rock and The Avenue, two Rochester-based arts organizations that empower girls, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors for Lambda Legal, a national organization dedicated to advancing the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.

BAAM Executive Director Dina Gomes Daly expressed deep gratitude for the gift, noting that it will ensure the long-term sustainability of the Girls Program. “This endowment is a game-changer for BAAM and the young women we serve. Eileen’s generosity will provide girls with the mentorship, education, and support they need to thrive.”

BAAM remains committed to fostering excellence in education, mentorship, and personal development for young people. With this gift, the organization takes a significant step forward in ensuring that girls have access to the same life-changing opportunities that have long been available to boys through BAAM’s programs.

For more information about BAAM and the Girls Program, please visit www.baaminc.org or contact Dina Gomes Daly at [email protected].

The Fiber Arts Center presents Joanne Scott – Inspiration in Fiber

April 3, 2025 by The Spy Desk Leave a Comment

Joanne Scott is more widely known on a national scale for her visual art – watercolor, acrylics,  etchings and lithographs. She had many one woman shows and awards at the Corcoran,  Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Walters Art Museum. She is also a published poet.

Joanne had a love of fiber and was an accomplished seamstress, sewing Vogue wool silk lined  suits. She was an embroiderer, and knitter. When she bought a summer cottage on Monhegan  Island in Maine, she took classes from Robert Semple, a world renown needlepoint artist. He  became mentor in needlepoint and colleague in art.

This will be the first time that Joanne’s fiber art will be exhibited. A museum piece of Robert  Semple’s is also included. Many of Joanne’s fiber art pieces were inspired by her visual art  pieces. These are displayed side-by-side. Much of the art is done in a needlepoint stitch called  libra point which is a short-long stitch. Examples of Joanne’s watercolors, acrylics, etchings  and photographs serve as inspirations for her fiber art. They have also inspired her daughter,  Victoria, to join in the exhibit with quilting and felting to round out the fiber art experience for  the viewer.

Joanne had a very full life. She attended the Boston Museum School, Nantucket School of Art,  Rhode Island School of Design, and the Maryland Institute of Art. She was widowed twice with  four children and many grand and great grand children. She was an expert sailor having lived  on boats and spent much time sailing open ocean. She was a leader whatever art community  she found herself in and worked to promote the arts, most notably in this area- she co-founded  Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis and Vice President of the Maryland Federation  of Art.

It is hoped that the viewer will take inspiration from this exhibit to create their own fiber art from  the art and nature around them.  This exhibit is on display at the Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore from May 21 through  August 2, 2025 and is free for all to enjoy.

Artist Reception May 31, 2025 from 3:00-6:00pm – please join us!

“One Stone” by Diz Hormel

Studio B Art Gallery is thrilled to announce its participation in the return of the First Friday Gallery Walk for 2025, featuring a special exhibition by acclaimed artist Diz Hormel. Join us on April 4, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. to meet the artist and view her stunning collection of still-life oil paintings.

Diz Hormel is an Eastern Shore-based artist known for her evocative oil paintings that capture a sense of serenity and timeless beauty. Specializing in still life, her work reflects a deep appreciation for the quiet elegance of organic forms and man-made objects. Classically trained under renowned artist Juliette Aristides, Diz’s paintings offer a gentle escape from the busyness of modern life.

“My journey to painting has been anything but direct,” Diz explained. “I took a drawing class in my early twenties and loved it, but life took many detours before I found my way back to art. I spent years working in the culinary profession and then making jewelry while I raised my three sons in DC. After moving to the Eastern Shore, I was struck by the beauty and serenity of my surroundings, which ultimately led me back to making art.”

Diz honed her skills through formal training, first studying metalsmithing at the Revere Academy and later at the Corcoran School of Art. Her interest in mastering traditional techniques led her to the Aristides Atelier, where she refined her methodical, layered approach to studio painting. Diz’s work is influenced by chiaroscuro lighting, thoughtful composition, and a meditative painting process that invites stillness and contemplation.

Diz is a board member of the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland. She served as chair for their annual Craft Show for 4 years and is now the chair of the Education Committee.

A member of the Oil Painters of America, Working Artists Forum, and St. Michaels Art League, Diz has received numerous accolades, including the 2024 Best in Show award at Local Color Easton.

“We are honored to feature Diz Hormel and her exquisite still life paintings,” said Studio B Art Gallery Owner Betty Huang. “Her work brings a sense of depth and tranquility that perfectly complements our gallery’s collection.”

Guests attending the First Friday Gallery Walk will have the opportunity to meet Diz, view her latest works, and learn more about her artistic process. Her exhibit at Studio B Art Gallery will showcase a collection of still life paintings that highlight her masterful use of light, form, and composition.

For more information about Studio B Art Gallery, visit us online at www.studiobartgallery.com, on Facebook and Instagram @studiobartgallery, or contact Betty Huang at [email protected].

Studio B Art Gallery is located at 7 B Goldsborough Street in historic downtown Easton, Maryland. Plein Air Painters of the Chesapeake Bay Exhibit and Paint-In at The Market at Dover Station

In a generous act of community outreach, The Market at Dover Station has invited the Plein Air Painters of the Chesapeake Bay (PAPCB) to exhibit recent plein air works at the Market through April 2025. An additional facet of this exhibit features a unique closing celebration in the form of a live alla prima paint-in, inside the Market on Saturday April 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to view the exhibit, watch the painters, and purchase their work.

Capturing the essence of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, from boatyards to farmyards, and everywhere in between, this plein air exhibit resonates with familiar places seen through the eyes of local and regional artists. The exposed bricks, open ductwork ceilings, and rustic floors of the Market’s 1912 renovated warehouse building generate warm vibes and make a wonderful exhibit space to showcase this fine art.

Since 2014, PAPCB has gathered weekly in spring and fall. With their easels set up on waterfront estates, historic village streets and working farms, they explore and document our region through their art. In varied and distinctive methods of painting, from loose impressionism and expressionism to a tighter realism, their mediums are oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pastel, and graphite. One member even makes monoprints in the field!

Ranging from brand new painters of all ages to seasoned award winners, PAPCB shares friendship, camaraderie, and creative support, and welcomes all to join them.

Since it opened on November 30, 2024, The Market at Dover Station has become an upscale regional hub showcasing the work of fine artists and artisans alongside a selection of antique and vintage goods, a florist and chocolatier, a tea company, handmade balms and lotions, and more. Market partners also offer interior design, fine china rental, woodwork, antique clock repair, and many other unique finds. The Market hosts events including yoga classes, Zentangle, urban sketching on the Rails to Trails, a book club, a wildlife photography class, jewelry classes, and art classes for kids and adults. And it offers space for weddings, meetings and family gatherings. Coming soon in phase 2 are plans for a bistro café and future brewery.

The Market at Dover Station is located at 500 Dover Road, Easton, Maryland 21601. For hours, events, and more information, please stay informed at www.doverstation.com and sign up to follow on social media.

LYON RUM receives Best of Class Designation; Sailors Reserve Rum earns only gold medal awarded in the Rum category

March 27, 2025 by The Spy Desk Leave a Comment

Share

The American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA), the only premier trade association representing the U.S. craft spirits industry, awarded LYON RUM gold and silver medals in the 11th Annual American Craft Spirits Competition. Founder Jaime Windon was honored in person at the recent ACSA Convention & Expo in Tucson, AZ. Windon also serves on the board of the association, and although LYON RUM does not generally enter spirits in competitions, she felt compelled to select three LYON RUM expressions for entry this round.

“We’ve always been more focused on collaboration than competition,” says Windon, “However, this year I was inspired to showcase our rums, not only for the judges, but for the reception where hundreds of distillers gather to sample each other’s spirits on the final night of the convention. Being in community with our fellow American craft distillers is paramount, and sharing our spirits with each other is simply the best.”

The ACSA Competition is based purely on numerical scoring rather than typical collaborative discussions. Spirits are scored on appearance, aroma intensity, aroma complexity, palate concentration, palate complexity, body, character and nature of alcohol, texture, and finish.

In addition to Best in Show and the Best of Class distinctions, the judging panel awarded 35 gold, 162 silver, and 114 bronze medals. Only one gold medal was awarded in the rum category, making LYON RUM a true standout among it’s peers. LYON White Rum and Overproof Pineapple both received excellent scores and were awarded silver medals.

The Best of Class Rum distinction, the highest honor, was awarded to LYON RUM for the Sailors Reserve, one of the distillery’s signature rums. Sailors Reserve is double distilled from Louisiana sugar cane and molasses, in traditional pot stills, and aged for 2-years in former bourbon barrels before being bottled at 100 proof. While most people are familiar with LYON Dark Rum, spirits aficionados have always revered the Sailors Reserve. LYON RUM currently offers a variety of expressions, including six year round rums, two seasonal rum liqueurs, and special holiday releases.

“We love rum — and are incredibly proud that a young American rum earned the top honor,” Windon remarked. “After 11 years of being fully committed to producing a true cane-to-glass rum, it’s a wonderful feeling to see this spirit fully appreciated; enjoyed not only by our loyal rum lovers and peers, but also recognized as excellent by a panel of experts.”

Dedicated to improving the reputation of American Rum, Windon and her team are relentless advocates for rum, championing the merits and delights of cane spirits from all over the world.

“Rum is a truly global spirit, and yet it is also uniquely American. As the oldest craft distillery in Maryland, now in our 12th year of making rum, we are proud to reignite an interest in, and passion for, distinctive and delicious American rum,” Windon said.

The distillery is open daily for complimentary samples in the Windon Distilling Spirit Shop & Tasting Room located at 605 S. Talbot Street, Unit #6 in Saint Michaels, Maryland.

The Hummingbird Inn is hosting a 3-night respite/wellness retreat March 21-24 for moms of children with special needs. This beautiful, historic B&B in Easton is the perfect getaway for our caregiving families in the DC/MD/VA area.

This retreat is one of nearly (300) scheduled throughout 2025 that A Mother’s Rest (AMR) coordinates, providing families across the country with essential time away from caregiving responsibilities. Acknowledging the emotional and physical strains parents and caregivers face is imperative in ensuring the best long term care to their children. The mission of AMR is to strengthen America’s special needs parents & caregivers through frequent, low-cost, year-round, in-person respite and therapeutic fellowship opportunities. We achieve this through partnerships with B&B inns across the country like the Hummingbird Inn (our Porch Partner Program).

A Mother’s Rest is the nation’s first and only non-profit network of year-round wellness inns, exclusively for the benefit of special needs parents & full-time family caregivers. The Hummingbird Inn will be hosting (1) respite-focused retreat with donated/discounted lodging in 2025. AMR “Porch Partners” and generous private donors make these retreats accessible and affordable (even free) to parents & other caregivers.

The Zebra Gallery opens new spring shows

March 16, 2025 by The Spy Desk Leave a Comment

Share

The Zebra Gallery will open two shows in April, with an opening on April 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. which will include live music by C. Thomas in the front gallery. The upper gallery will feature a solo exhibition, “Take Flight” by metal sculptor Dave Dunn. The square gallery will feature “Fairweather Artists” – the works of 12 seasoned artists in a variety of mediums.

Dunn is a metal sculptor who creates movement and whimsy by welding found, repurposed, and new metal objects into his artwork. He repurposes tools of industry such as bike gear mechanisms or auto parts to use in his “sea creature” sculpture series to symbolize the constant movement and change of the sea, the ebb and flow of the tides, and the sea creatures within. He constructs imaginative primordial creatures out of anything that lands at his feet and fingertips…sometimes scrap metal, bicycle chains, nuts and bolts. Dunn shuffles together unsuspecting material to breathe whimsical delight into his imagined creatures. Dunn’s “Dunn in Metal Studio” is in Silver Spring, Maryland. His work can be found in galleries around the country and in private collections throughout the United States and in Europe. His work is currently the “Featured Southern Artist of 2025” with a six-month solo installation at the largest museum in northwestern Tennessee.

The Fairweather Artists represent artists whose work is in oils and acrylics, gouache, collage, digital painting and photography – to create an extraordinary show of beautiful vistas, vignettes and subjects. Members include Nancy Arons, Ellen Broadman, Sarah Clayton Davis, Karen Kuell Epstein, Susan Sinclair Galego, Lee Ann Howdershell, Jennifer Howard, Christianne King, Ingrid Matuszewski, Lisa Sieg, Patrick Sieg, and Stacy Yochum. These artists have known each other, worked together and appreciated each other’s art for many years, initially meeting through classes and painting on location in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. For the Zebra Gallery they have collaborated to create this exquisite multimedia show.

“We are thrilled to have this mix of artists and art to welcome in spring. It’s both inspirational and fun. These artists join our growing list of regular exhibitors in the gallery, which is expanding every day,” states Susan Schauer John, owner of the Zebra Gallery.

Zebra Gallery is now on ARTSY which enables collectors to purchase works directly online from this show and future shows.

The Artists of The Zebra Gallery include Tobi Adebisi, Joseph Barbaccia, Mitsi Bernard, Ula Buka, April Claggett, Bondu Deji, Frank DePietro, David Dunn, Quadri Afis Enitan, Deniz Erguney, Lana Frey, Richard Fritz, Margery Goldberg, Lynn Goldstein, Adam Henerson, Adam Himoff, Bernie Houston, Erdman Hummel, Gina Jacklin, Joanna Jago, Terry John, Anne Jordan, Jack Knight, Yelena Lamm, Gabriel Lehman, Ingrid Matuszewski, Barbara Michalczuk, Thyra Moore, Victor Popoola, Larry Ringgold, Jacinthe Rivard, Kim Santini, Susan Fay Schauer, Mike Sorge, Jen Sterling, Serhii Vlasenko, and Cindy Winnick.

Steven J. Schupak named Maryland Public Television’s next president and chief executive officer

March 11, 2025 by The Spy Desk Leave a Comment

Share

Maryland Public Television (MPT) today announced that Steven J. Schupak, MPT’s current executive vice president and station manager, will become the sixth president and chief executive officer of the 55-year-old statewide TV network on July 1, succeeding retiring CEO Larry D. Unger.

Schupak’s selection by MPT’s governing body, the Maryland Public Broadcasting Commission, came after a nationwide search. Commission Vice Chair Richard J. Bodorff led the search committee.

“It’s an honor to take the helm of Maryland Public Television, a remarkable organization with a rich history of engaging audiences through educational, documentary, natural history, arts, public affairs, and community-based programming,” said Schupak. “Even though the media landscape is constantly evolving, the talented team here will keep our service-driven mission at the heart of everything we do, consistent with our promise to enrich lives and strengthen communities.”

A Potomac, Maryland, resident, Schupak joined MPT in 2003 after a two-decade career in television and media.  He was named chief operating officer in 2014 and station manager in 2021. During his MPT tenure, he has been responsible for content creation, educational services, and development activities in addition to overseeing the network’s finance and accounting operations.

In addition, he created the eight-year-old Maryland State Ad Agency division of MPT to provide advertising and media buying services for Maryland state agencies and other governmental clients. More recently, he oversaw the launch of the Maryland Center for Media Literacy & Education, MPT’s comprehensive education division that includes programs and services to enhance media literacy statewide and, in particular, among school-age children.

His efforts have helped build MPT into one of the nation’s top producing stations and the sixth-largest in total revenue among the 150 PBS member stations. MPT is the largest in total revenue among the 18 state-licensed public TV stations in the United States.

Prior to joining MPT, Schupak served as vice president at Henninger Media Services where he oversaw the firm’s program production and cable distribution efforts.  Other earlier posts included executive positions at COMSAT Video Enterprises and the National Cable Television Association. He began his TV career at the ABC Television Network.

Schupak is a member of the board of directors of the National Educational Telecommunications Association. In addition, he serves as vice chair and director on the board of the Olney Theatre Center.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter in 2020 inducted Schupak into its prestigious Silver Circle in recognition of his contributions to the broadcast industry for 25 years or more.  In 2023, he was given the Maryland International Film Festival’s Mendez Award for professional excellence and significant achievement in the TV industry.  The following year, the Maryland Daily Record named him an “Influential Marylander.”

Schupak is an alumnus of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where he earned an undergraduate degree in film and television. He holds a master’s degree in marketing from the University of Maryland Global Campus and earned that institution’s highest alumni honor, the Distinguished Alumnus Award, in 2019.  He is also a 2019 graduate of Leadership Maryland.
